“Menace To Myself”

The past few years I’ve spent a large part of my time playing music in bars and living in-between the real-world and the night-world. The song Menace to Myself embraces the night-world, because it is all about having a good time, even if it comes at the expense of everything else. 

I wrote this song about many of the men I grew up around, including my Dad, Joe. They were the kind of guys who would go to work on a job site for 12 hours a day and then spend the next 6 hours at the bar down the road. There would always be a scuffle, some money changing hands over a pool table, and plenty of stories to get them through the next day’s shift.

“Keep You Wishing”

This song is telling a story of a man who I think we’ve all either met or been, but instead of telling the story line-by-line, we let the story be more about a feeling and a groove that comes out in between the verses.

Every town he goes to, he needs to meet a woman. Sometimes it was just a drink at the bar in between sets. Other times things go further. He knows how to weaponize desire for his own benefit, and he does it so well that she goes from wishing to see him again to wishing they had never met. He smokes Marlboro Reds and you can’t help but want to buy him a drink.

“Lightning In A Bottle”

Inspired by childhood adventures in and around Alabama's Talladega National Forest, "Lightning in a Bottle" follows a young man left to fend for himself after the death of his father and the departure of his mother.

Guided by an uncle who teaches him the art of moonshining, the protagonist transforms a means of survival into a livelihood, only to watch it disappear with the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.
